First Look Revealed for Mike Flanagan's Carrie Series
Horror fans have finally gotten their first look at one of the year's most anticipated television series.
Prime Video has officially released the first images from Carrie, Mike Flanagan's upcoming eight episode adaptation of Stephen King's groundbreaking 1974 novel. The new photos introduce audiences to Summer H. Howell as Carrie White while offering a fresh look at Samantha Sloyan as her deeply religious mother, Margaret White.

While Carrie has been adapted several times before, Flanagan says this version isn't simply another remake.
Instead, he's using the longer television format to expand King's original story in ways previous films couldn't.

"This isn't about trying to replace Brian De Palma's film," Flanagan told Entertainment Weekly. Instead, he described the project as an opportunity to build "something new" while staying true to the emotional core of Stephen King's novel.
One of the biggest changes is the setting.
Rather than taking place decades ago, Flanagan's Carrie unfolds in the present day, allowing the series to explore modern issues including online bullying, social media, isolation, and the pressures facing teenagers today. Those themes, according to Flanagan, make the story feel just as relevant now as it did when King first published the novel more than fifty years ago.
The new adaptation also takes a different approach to its main character.

Summer H. Howell's Carrie is described as more curious and emotionally open than previous versions of the character. Rather than portraying her solely as a shy outcast, the series aims to spend more time exploring who Carrie is before tragedy completely changes her life.
Samantha Sloyan's Margaret White will also be portrayed differently.
Instead of presenting Carrie's mother as simply a terrifying religious fanatic, Flanagan says the character will be more layered and complex, allowing viewers to better understand the motivations behind her strict and abusive parenting.
Perhaps the most surprising revelation is how much larger the story will become.

Flanagan confirmed that the series will expand beyond Carrie's personal journey by exploring the mysterious telekinetic abilities introduced in King's novel. Beginning with the second episode, each installment will reportedly introduce different women from various points in history who share similar psychic powers, significantly expanding the mythology surrounding Carrie's abilities.
That makes this adaptation feel less like a straightforward retelling and more like an expansion of Stephen King's original world.
The cast also features several familiar faces.
Alongside Summer H. Howell and Samantha Sloyan, the series stars Siena Agudong, Amber Midthunder, Josie Totah, Joel Oulette, Arthur Conti, Matthew Lillard, Heather Graham, Kate Siegel, Rahul Kohli, Katee Sackhoff, and Michael Trucco.
The project marks another collaboration between Flanagan and Stephen King's work.
The filmmaker previously adapted Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck, earning praise from both critics and King himself for remaining faithful to the author's stories while bringing his own creative vision to each adaptation.
King is also serving as an executive producer on the new series, giving the project another connection to the original novel.

Prime Video has confirmed that Carrie will premiere this fall, although an exact release date has not yet been announced.
Based on these first images, however, it's clear that Flanagan isn't interested in recreating the past.
He's trying to tell a new version of one of horror's most iconic stories for an entirely new generation.
