Jurassic Park River Adventure Won't Be Back Until December 17, Nearly a Year After It Closed
Universal pushed the Islands of Adventure water ride back another month. Here's what's being worked on, from the Ultrasaur's neck to the Stegosaurus faces, and what else is closed at Universal Orlando this fall.

Jurassic Park River Adventure isn't coming back in November after all. Universal Orlando has moved the ride's reopening at Islands of Adventure from November 19 to December 17, 2026, adding nearly another month to a closure that started all the way back on January 5.
If the new date holds, the ride will have been down for about eleven months, its longest closure in a very long time. Universal hasn't given a reason for the extension, and its page for the ride now simply lists the December date and says it's closed for scheduled maintenance. As with any refurbishment, the date can still change.
What's been happening behind the walls
Universal hasn't shared any details about the work, but what's visible from around the ride gives a pretty good picture. The biggest project appears to be the animatronics in the first scene, the gentle float past the plant eaters before everything goes wrong.
The Ultrasaur, the huge long necked dinosaur that greets the boats, has had its skin removed and a new white armature installed in its neck. That figure has looked like it had a broken neck for years, so fans are hoping the new structure means smoother movement. Across the river, the baby Stegosaurus had its face skin taken off so the moving parts of its head could be upgraded, and the adult Stegosaurus has been missing from its usual spot.
There's work on the ride itself too. Pipes have been disconnected near one section, which points to work on the pumps that keep the water moving. Parts of the outside walls have been replaced and given yellow weatherproofing ahead of a final concrete style finish, and the entrance roof is being redone. The scaffolding next to the splashdown rockwork has already come down.

Most of the boats aren't even at the ride right now. Only one sits on the course, a few more are parked backstage, and the bulk of the fleet is staged on a lot across the street from Epic Universe, the same spot that held the track for Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift before it was installed.
Is it turning into Jurassic World?
That rumor comes up every time this ride closes, because Universal Studios Hollywood turned its version into Jurassic World: The Ride, replacing the opening scene with a screen based mosasaur tank. There's no sign of that happening in Orlando. Everything visible so far points to repairs and upgrades for the existing dinosaurs, not new ones, and some fans have heard that budget cuts trimmed the scope of the work.
The two rides share a lot of history. Universal Studios Hollywood opened Jurassic Park: The Ride in 1996, three years before the Orlando version, and switched it over to Jurassic World: The Ride in 2019. Orlando has kept the original 1993 movie theme the whole time, and for a lot of fans that's part of the appeal.
Why this ride matters
Jurassic Park River Adventure opened with Islands of Adventure in 1999 and has been one of the park's signature rides ever since. It starts as a calm boat tour through the park from the movie, takes a wrong turn into the raptor containment area and ends with a T. rex lunging at the boat just before the 85 foot drop into the lagoon.
On a hot Florida day it's the coolest ride in the park, literally, so losing it for most of the year has stung. The closure also puts more pressure on the other big rides at Islands of Adventure, especially VelociCoaster and Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, which already have some of the longest waits at the resort.

Everything else closed at Universal Orlando this fall
Jurassic Park isn't the only thing offline. Volcano Bay's last day of the year is October 25, and the water park closes on October 26 for its seasonal maintenance. It's scheduled to reopen on or before April 1, 2027, while the three theme parks, CityWalk and the hotels stay open as usual.
Over at Universal Studios Florida, Animal Actors On Location! plays its final performances on November 2 to make way for a future experience Universal hasn't named yet. The Horror Make-Up Show is closed until its new version featuring Blumhouse opens, and Finnegan's Bar and Grill is closed with a return planned for winter 2026.
Skull Island: Reign of Kong is open, but with a modified ending while the damaged Kong figure waits on repairs, and there's no timeline for the full finale to come back. And Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, the coaster replacing Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit, is in testing with waterfront walkways taking shape around it, ahead of a 2027 opening with no exact date yet.

Planning around the closures
If you're visiting before December 17, plan your Islands of Adventure day without the water ride and lean on the park's other classics, like The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man, Jurassic World VelociCoaster and Popeye and Bluto's Bilge-Rat Barges if you still want to get wet. Do VelociCoaster and Hagrid's early, since those two absorb a lot of the extra crowd.
If your trip lands right around the reopening, keep an eye on the Universal app. Rides coming off long refurbishments sometimes start testing with guests a little early, and sometimes slip a few days. The December 17 date puts it back just before the Christmas rush, which is when the park needs it most.
Halloween Horror Nights runs at Universal Studios Florida through November 1 and the holiday season starts November 14, so check our crowd calendar for the busiest nights before you pick your dates.
