Dead, Deader, Deadest Announced for Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood

Universal’s first original haunted house announcement for Hollywood’s 2026 event will take guests inside the DeVille Family Funeral Home, where a supposed miracle drug has brought the dead back in the worst possible way.

The DeVille family is ready to welcome Halloween Horror Nights guests, although some of its recently deceased customers may not be staying dead.

Universal has officially announced Dead, Deader, Deadest, a new original haunted house coming to Halloween Horror Nights 2026 at Universal Studios Hollywood. The experience will uncover the dark secrets hiding inside the DeVille Family Funeral Home, where an experimental treatment has caused the bodies to rise from their graves.

Welcome to the DeVille Family Funeral Home

The story centers around a supposed miracle drug known as Ambrotox.

Ambrotox claims to restore the appearance of the deceased without requiring the traditional embalming process. That promise sounds like the perfect opportunity for a family funeral business, but the treatment soon backfires. Instead of simply preserving the bodies, Ambrotox reanimates them.

Guests will enter the funeral home after the experiment has gone horribly wrong, coming face to face with aggressive corpses that have escaped their coffins and risen from their graves. The announcement suggests the house will combine classic zombie horror with the uncomfortable setting of a working mortuary.

The concept gives Universal plenty of opportunities for disturbing environments. Guests could potentially pass through viewing rooms, preparation areas, embalming chambers, graveyards and rooms filled with bodies waiting to wake up.

Universal has not revealed the complete scene list, so those specific locations remain speculation. However, the funeral home setting and failed Ambrotox experiment are officially part of the house’s story.

Is This Connected to Maxie DeVille?

The name DeVille will immediately stand out to longtime Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood fans.

Maxie DeVille was the central villain of Universal Horror Hotel, an original haunted house presented at Universal Studios Hollywood during Halloween Horror Nights 2022. That experience followed a wealthy hotel owner and serial killer whose victims continued haunting the property after his death.

The new house being set inside the DeVille Family Funeral Home strongly raises the possibility that Universal is expanding the DeVille mythology instead of creating a completely unrelated family with the same name.

Universal has not officially confirmed that Maxie will appear in Dead, Deader, Deadest, or that the funeral home belongs to his immediate relatives. For now, the connection should be treated as a theory.

Still, the shared surname feels very intentional, especially after DeVille references were spotted around the Hollywood house construction before the announcement.

This could allow Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood to begin developing its own connected collection of original characters and locations. Instead of Maxie DeVille remaining the villain of a single 2022 house, his family history could become part of a much larger Hollywood horror story.

Hollywood’s First Original House of 2026

Dead, Deader, Deadest is the first original haunted house announced specifically for Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood’s 2026 lineup.

The event has already revealed several houses based on major horror properties, including Sinners, Stranger Things 5, Hellraiser and Evil Dead Burn. The addition of an original funeral home story gives Hollywood something created specifically for the event rather than adapted from an existing movie or series.

Original houses are often where Universal’s designers can take the biggest creative risks. There is no movie storyline they must recreate, meaning the team can develop its own creatures, kills, characters and scares around the Ambrotox experiment.

With reanimated bodies, funeral imagery and a possible connection to Maxie DeVille, Dead, Deader, Deadest could become one of Hollywood’s most important original houses in years.

Halloween Horror Nights runs on select nights at Universal Studios Hollywood from September 3 through November 1, 2026.
