Epic Universe's First Expansion Is Rising Behind Dark Universe. Here's What the Permits Show
Crews have cleared the woods behind Monsters Unchained and are now putting in foundations for a three story building. Universal hasn't said what it is, but the paperwork points to a new indoor ride.

Epic Universe hasn't even been open for a year and a half, and it's already growing. Construction is well underway on a large building behind Dark Universe, the park's monster themed land, and it's the first project to break ground at Epic Universe since the park opened on May 22, 2025.
Universal hasn't announced what's being built. But between county permits and a steady stream of aerial photos, we can piece together a pretty good picture of what's happening and where.
Where it is
The site sits directly behind Darkmoor Village and the show building for Monsters Unchained, The Frankenstein Experiment, between that building and the road that circles Epic Universe. The Curse of the Werewolf coaster and the gothic manor facade of Monsters Unchained are right next door.
Until recently, this was a stretch of woods. Now it's been cleared all the way to the back edge of the expanded Monsters Unchained queue. Crews have also cut a dirt access road around the backstage buildings, which meant removing or rerouting some paved areas behind the land.
What the permits say
The project shows up in Orange County filings as Project 680, filed over the summer. The permits describe a three story building with 93,308 square feet in total and about 71,500 square feet of usable space, on a 3.34 acre site. Whiting Turner is listed as the general contractor.
The most telling line is a ride maintenance bay on the first floor. That's the kind of space you need for a ride system, and it's the strongest hint that this is an indoor attraction rather than a restaurant or support building. Earlier site plans labeled this same piece of land Expansion Phase 2.
One related site work permit runs into January 2027, but that's a paperwork deadline, not a construction schedule, so don't read it as an opening date.

What's happening on site
Excavation started in September. By early October, the project had moved from clearing land into real construction. Photos posted October 3 show most of the site graded and level, crane mounted equipment installing foundation piles near the center, and an excavator still digging out a wide depression.
There's more around the edges. Trenches run along the back of the Monsters Unchained building and beside the roadway, bundles of steel reinforcement are staged next to a backstage building, and orange safety fencing marks the active dig areas. The steel looks like it's meant for poured foundation columns, which fits the size of the building on the permits.
A newer aerial video from October 11 shows a bulldozer pushing mud around after heavy rain, so progress may look slower in the latest shots than it really is.
If you're visiting soon, don't expect to see much of this from inside the park. The work zone sits behind the show buildings and black construction fencing, so the clearest views so far have come from aerial photos rather than from the guest walkways. The rides and shops in Dark Universe are running as usual.
What Dark Universe has now
Right now, Dark Universe has two rides. Monsters Unchained, The Frankenstein Experiment is the big dark ride, and it just won Best Dark Ride at the 2026 Golden Ticket Awards. Curse of the Werewolf is a spinning family coaster. The rest of the land is food and shopping, including Burning Blade Tavern.
Monsters Unchained is built around Victoria Frankenstein and her experiment with the classic Universal monsters, and its queue winds through the ruins of Frankenstein Manor. It's the anchor of Darkmoor, the gothic village at the heart of the land.
Dark Universe is one of five worlds at Epic Universe, along with Super Nintendo World, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter Ministry of Magic, How to Train Your Dragon Isle of Berk and Celestial Park, the hub that ties them all together.
That's a small lineup for such a detailed land, and it's one reason a third attraction here makes sense. Earlier site plans marked this exact piece of land for expansion, so it looks like Universal set it aside for growth early on.

So what could it be?
This is where it turns into guesswork. Universal hasn't confirmed a theme, a ride type or even that it's a ride. Fans have floated the Creature from the Black Lagoon and the Bride of Frankenstein as possible stars, and some have pointed to odd footprints in the Monsters Unchained queue as a nod to the Gill man.
The Creature idea has history, too. Universal has looked at a Creature from the Black Lagoon water ride in the past, though it never got built. None of that tells us what this building will be, so treat any theme talk as a fan theory for now.
The other open question is the entrance. Based on the layout, the new attraction would most likely be reached from inside Darkmoor, somewhere near Burning Blade Tavern, but there's no official map yet.

When will we know more?
Universal hasn't given any timeline for an announcement, and with foundations only now going in, an official reveal could still be a while off. Big indoor attractions usually take a couple of years or more from foundations to opening, which points to sometime later this decade rather than next year.
Elsewhere at Epic Universe, the second Universal Nights after hours event is coming up on Saturday, October 17. We'll keep checking in on the Dark Universe site and update this story as soon as Universal says what's going up behind the monsters.
