Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood Reveals Its 2026 Scare Zones at Midsummer Scream
From Fortnite taking over the streets to a twisted Mexican circus and creatures crawling out of the bayou, Universal Studios Hollywood has revealed what guests will encounter outside the haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights 2026.
Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood’s 2026 lineup is finally coming together, and we now know what will be waiting for guests once they step outside of the haunted houses.
During the annual Halloween Horror Nights panel at Midsummer Scream on Sunday, August 9, Creative Director John Murdy revealed the remaining pieces of this year’s event, including several new scare zones and street experiences that will take over Universal Studios Hollywood when HHN begins September 3.
While the haunted houses usually get most of the attention leading into Horror Nights, the scare zones are a huge part of what makes the event feel different from a regular night at Universal. They fill the spaces between attractions with scareactors, sets, lighting, fog and plenty of chainsaws, meaning leaving a haunted house doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting a break.
This year, guests will encounter Hackerz, FORTNITEMARES, El Circo de la Muerte and Blood Bog, alongside a few additional experiences spread throughout the park.
Hackerz will be one of the first threats guests encounter as they begin their night. Universal describes the area as being filled with a troop of chainsaw killers, continuing a longtime Hollywood tradition of throwing guests directly into the action shortly after they enter the event.
Chainsaws have been a huge part of Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood for years, particularly around the park entrance, and Hackerz sounds like it will keep that tradition going with its own identity for 2026.
Then there’s FORTNITEMARES, which was actually revealed ahead of the Midsummer Scream panel and is easily the most unusual scare zone in this year’s lineup.
Based on Fortnite’s annual Halloween event, the scare zone will bring the game into the real world as the Storm spreads across the area and unleashes characters inspired by the darker side of Fortnite. Universal says the zone will feature fearsome foes and unsettling surprises pulled from FORTNITEMARES, giving the event another major video game collaboration.
Fortnite has spent years crossing over with horror properties, including characters and franchises that already have connections to Halloween Horror Nights. Seeing Universal turn that into an actual physical scare zone should be interesting, especially since Fortnite’s exaggerated character designs give the creative team a lot to work with when it comes to costumes and environments.
One of the more original concepts announced during the panel is El Circo de la Muerte.
Guests will encounter this scare zone after exiting the newly announced KILLceañera: Music by SLASH haunted house. The zone takes inspiration from circus and sideshow acts that traveled throughout Mexico during the 1930s, except Halloween Horror Nights is naturally giving that history a much darker interpretation.
The placement is especially interesting because it allows the atmosphere of KILLceañera to continue after guests leave the house. Instead of immediately walking back into a normal section of the park, you’ll exit into another original horror environment with its own characters and story.
That connection could make this entire portion of the event feel much larger than a standalone haunted house.
The final major scare zone announced is Blood Bog, which takes guests away from the circus and into something much more creature focused.
Universal says moss monsters will roam the bogs and bayous of the zone, giving Hollywood an original swamp inspired concept filled with creatures rather than traditional slashers or zombies.
There’s still a lot we haven’t seen from Blood Bog, but the idea has plenty of potential visually. A swamp setting gives the HHN team an excuse to go heavy on fog, vegetation, murky lighting and creature costumes, and those types of environments tend to work especially well once the park gets completely dark.
The Midsummer Scream panel also confirmed that Murder of Crowz will return this year. The bizarre crow family has become a recurring part of Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood, and dad, mom and baby crow will once again be flocking to their nest during the event.
Another street experience called Shriek of the Banshee will feature a carnival barker operating a wagon alongside a talking skeleton. It sounds smaller than a traditional scare zone, but these types of roaming or stationary characters can add a lot to the areas of the park that otherwise sit between the larger experiences. We got an early glimpse of a 4-Legged Stilt walker that you can find in this zone.
The Death Eaters are returning as well, once again taking over The Wizarding World of Harry Potter beginning in the early evening. Voldemort’s followers have become a regular part of Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights lineup, roaming through Hogsmeade and interacting with guests as the area shifts into its nighttime atmosphere.
There’s also one more character guests should keep an eye out for this year, although she isn’t technically part of a traditional scare zone.
Nikki from Obsession is coming to Halloween Horror Nights.
Universal confirmed during the panel that guests may encounter Nikki somewhere on the darkened streets of the park, bringing the breakout horror film into HHN without dedicating an entire haunted house to it. The appearance will revolve around the One Wish Willow curse from the movie, although Universal hasn’t revealed exactly where Nikki will appear or how frequently guests will encounter her.
It was one of the more unexpected announcements from the panel and gives Obsession fans at least some representation at the event this year.
With the scare zones now revealed, we finally have a much clearer picture of what Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood will look like in 2026. There’s a noticeable mix between recognizable properties and original ideas, with Fortnite occupying one end of the spectrum while concepts like Blood Bog and El Circo de la Muerte give Universal’s creative team room to build something completely from scratch.
More importantly, the streets should feel busy this year. Between four main scare zones, Murder of Crowz, Shriek of the Banshee, Nikki, the Death Eaters and even the possibility of Art the Clown appearing in unexpected locations outside of his Terror Tram experience, there should be quite a bit happening between haunted houses.
Halloween Horror Nights 2026 begins at Universal Studios Hollywood on September 3 and runs on select nights through November 1.
