Knott’s Berry Farm Finally Announces Opening Plans for MonteZOOMa: The Forbidden Fortress

After more than four years behind construction walls and multiple delays, one of California’s most iconic roller coasters is finally preparing to welcome guests once again.

The wait is almost over.

After years of construction, delays, and plenty of speculation from coaster enthusiasts, Knott’s Berry Farm has officially confirmed that MonteZOOMa: The Forbidden Fortress is preparing to reopen this month, marking the return of one of California’s most legendary roller coasters.

The park has announced a media preview on July 20, with the attraction expected to open to guests shortly afterward. An exact public opening time will be revealed during the preview event.

The reopening brings an end to one of the longest and most talked about attraction refurbishments in recent theme park history.

Originally known as Montezooma’s Revenge, the Schwarzkopf shuttle loop coaster first opened in 1978 and quickly became one of Knott’s Berry Farm’s signature attractions. At the time, it was the world’s first flywheel launched roller coaster, accelerating riders from 0 to 55 miles per hour in just 4.5 seconds before sending them through a vertical loop and up a 148 foot spike.

The coaster remained a fan favorite for more than four decades before unexpectedly closing in early 2022 for what was originally expected to be a relatively straightforward refurbishment.

Instead, the project became much more ambitious.

During the renovation, Knott’s announced the attraction would receive a completely new storyline, updated queue, immersive theming, and an entirely new launch system. The original flywheel mechanism, which had powered the coaster since 1978, has been replaced with a modern synchronous motor launch system designed to provide smoother and more reliable launches.

The attraction has also received a new identity.

Rather than simply reopening as Montezooma’s Revenge, guests will now experience MonteZOOMa: The Forbidden Fortress, a story driven adventure centered around an ancient temple filled with hidden treasure, dangerous traps, and the legendary gold of Montezooma.

According to Knott’s, riders will board themed mine train style vehicles before attempting to escape the fortress with its priceless treasure.

One of the biggest additions is a randomized launch sequence.

Unlike the original coaster, where riders knew exactly when the launch would occur, the new version introduces an unpredictable countdown designed to keep guests guessing until the train suddenly accelerates out of the station.

Despite the extensive changes, the ride itself remains instantly recognizable.

The coaster will still rocket from 0 to 55 miles per hour, race through its iconic vertical loop, climb the towering spike, roll backward through the station, and complete the course exactly as generations of Knott’s visitors remember.

That familiar ride experience is part of what has made Montezooma’s Revenge so beloved.

It is currently the last Schwarzkopf Shuttle Loop operating in the United States and the oldest one still standing in its original location, making it an important piece of roller coaster history.

The refurbishment hasn’t been without challenges.

When Knott’s first announced the project, MonteZOOMa was expected to reopen alongside the reimagined Fiesta Village in 2023. As construction continued, that timeline slipped multiple times, leading many fans to wonder whether the attraction would ever return.

Now, after more than four years behind construction walls, the finish line finally appears to be in sight.

For coaster enthusiasts, the reopening represents far more than just another attraction returning to service.

MonteZOOMa has been part of Knott’s Berry Farm for nearly half a century, introducing millions of guests to launched roller coasters long before they became common across the industry.

Its return also restores one of Fiesta Village’s defining attractions after the area reopened without its signature coaster in 2023.

As July 20 approaches, excitement continues to build among longtime fans eager to see how the classic coaster has been transformed for a new generation.

If all goes according to plan, guests won’t have to wait much longer to experience MonteZOOMa: The Forbidden Fortress for themselves.
