Six Flags Over Texas Opens Tormenta Rampaging Run, the World’s First Giga Dive Coaster
The 309-foot attraction breaks six world records and serves as the centerpiece of the park’s 65th anniversary season.
The newest giant on the Arlington skyline is officially carrying riders.
Tormenta Rampaging Run opened Thursday, July 9, at Six Flags Over Texas, bringing a new record-breaking coaster and an entirely new Spanish village to the original Six Flags park. Standing 309 feet tall, Tormenta is being billed as the tallest, fastest and longest dive coaster ever built and the first dive coaster to enter “giga” territory.

The ride begins by slowly carrying passengers more than 300 feet above the park, offering a view of Arlington and the surrounding Dallas-Fort Worth area. Once the train reaches the top, riders are positioned over the edge of a 285-foot first drop and held there for three seconds before being released.
Tormenta then sends riders down at a beyond-vertical angle of 95 degrees, reaching a top speed of 87 miles per hour. The coaster continues through 4,199 feet of track, including a massive 218-foot Immelmann inversion and a 179-foot vertical loop.

According to Six Flags, Tormenta Rampaging Run now holds six world records:
Tallest dive coaster at 309 feet Highest 95-degree beyond-vertical drop at 285 feet Fastest dive coaster at 87 miles per hour Highest Immelmann inversion at 218 feet Tallest vertical coaster loop at 179 feet Longest dive coaster at 4,199 feet
What makes Tormenta especially unusual is the combination of a traditional dive coaster experience with the scale normally associated with the world’s largest thrill rides. Dive coasters are known for stopping passengers at the edge of their first drop, but Tormenta performs that signature hold from more than 300 feet in the air.
The new coaster is themed around the power and strength of a legendary bull named Tormenta. Its open-air ride vehicles are designed to resemble the colorful clothing worn by runners during traditional Spanish celebrations, tying the trains into the larger story surrounding the attraction.
Tormenta also anchors Rancho de la Tormenta, a newly developed Spanish village located within the park’s existing Spain area. Guests enter the plaza beneath colorful banners while Spanish music plays throughout the area, with the coaster towering above the surrounding buildings.
The expanded area also includes Cocina de la Abuela, a new restaurant created as part of the park’s 65th anniversary additions. Six Flags describes Tormenta as the signature attraction of the anniversary season, which also includes updated entertainment, park improvements and a new museum celebrating the history of Six Flags Over Texas.
Riders must be at least 48 inches tall to experience Tormenta Rampaging Run. The attraction also lists a maximum rider height of 78 inches.
Tormenta’s opening gives Six Flags Over Texas a dramatically different centerpiece from anything else currently operating at the park. While attractions such as Titan and New Texas Giant have long defined its coaster lineup, Tormenta introduces a new level of height, speed, and spectacle, and features one of the most intimidating first drops Six Flags has ever built.
