The iconic Universal Studios Florida entrance is covered in scaffolding and scrims right now, dramatically changing the appearance of one of the most recognizable sights at Universal Orlando Resort. The construction work comes just days before Halloween Horror Nights 2026 begins on August 28, meaning thousands of guests will soon be walking through the gateway surrounded by construction equipment during the resort's biggest seasonal event.
Theme park photographer bioreconstruct shared photos of the entrance on August 25, showing just how much construction equipment has appeared around the gateway. A significant portion of the structure is now covered by tall white scrims, with scaffolding positioned around it. The familiar Universal Studios signage remains visible, but the construction covering has dramatically changed the view that guests have seen for 36 years.
Universal has not indicated that the famous entrance is going anywhere. Construction projects are nothing unusual at Universal Orlando, with maintenance, repainting, repairs and other work routinely happening throughout the resort. But when that work involves one of the first things guests see before entering a theme park, it tends to attract more attention.
The Gateway Has Welcomed Guests Since 1990
Universal Studios Florida officially opened on June 7, 1990, introducing Orlando to a new kind of theme park experience. The park initially leaned heavily into the idea that guests could ride the movies, with attractions inspired by major Hollywood productions and experiences designed to bring visitors closer to filmmaking.
The entrance has remained one of Universal Studios Florida's most familiar visual landmarks through decades of changes inside the park itself. Many attractions associated with the park's earliest years have disappeared, including Kongfrontation, Jaws, Back to the Future: The Ride, Earthquake: The Big One and Nickelodeon Studios.
New franchises gradually took their places. Today, guests can experience areas and attractions based around Harry Potter, Minions, Transformers, The Mummy, Fast & Furious and other major properties. Universal has continued reinventing the park rather than allowing it to remain frozen in its 1990 form.
Through all those changes, the gateway has remained constant. Guests often stop around the entrance for photos before entering the park, while the giant Universal Studios Florida lettering immediately establishes where they are. Even people who haven't visited Universal Orlando in years can recognize the gateway from vacation photos and videos.
Construction Timing Puts Scaffolding Front and Center During Halloween Horror Nights
The timing makes the project particularly noticeable. Halloween Horror Nights 2026 begins at Universal Studios Florida on August 28, meaning the entrance will soon welcome enormous nighttime crowds throughout the event's run.
Halloween Horror Nights transforms Universal Studios Florida after dark, filling the park with haunted houses, scare zones, entertainment, themed food and characters roaming through areas that look completely different during regular operating hours. The 2026 event features 10 haunted houses, including experiences inspired by Stranger Things 5, Ozzy Osbourne, Hellraiser, Evil Dead and Sinners.
For many Universal fans, Halloween Horror Nights is no longer simply an extra event attached to a theme park vacation. It has become the reason for the trip. That means plenty of guests will encounter the construction almost immediately upon arriving.
The gateway is especially important visually during Halloween Horror Nights because entering Universal Studios Florida becomes part of the buildup. Guests gather outside before the event, crowds move through the entrance, and the park transitions from its daytime identity into something much darker. This year, that familiar arrival scene will come with scaffolding and scrims in the background, at least while the current work continues.
Universal Orlando Is in a Different Position Than It Was Just a Few Years Ago
The work also comes while Universal Orlando Resort finds itself in a very different position than it occupied even a few years ago. Epic Universe officially opened in May 2025, giving Universal Orlando its third major theme park alongside Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure.
The arrival of Epic Universe represented the resort's largest expansion in decades. Guests can now visit five major themed worlds there: Celestial Park, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD, Dark Universe, How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk and The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic.
That expansion has naturally shifted some attention toward Universal's newest park. However, Universal Studios Florida remains a major piece of the resort, and changes continue happening there as well. The park has evolved repeatedly throughout its history, sometimes through individual attraction replacements and other times through major transformations of entire areas.
Even the area surrounding the park has changed. CityWalk has grown and evolved, new hotels have opened across the resort, and Universal Orlando has transformed from a destination that could once be experienced relatively quickly into a sprawling vacation resort. Through all of that growth, guests have continued walking through those Universal Studios Florida arches.
The Entrance Has Become Part of Universal Orlando's Identity
The massive Universal Studios Florida gateway has become an instantly recognizable part of Universal Orlando's visual identity. Walking toward the arches gives guests that unmistakable feeling that the day is about to begin. It serves as the unofficial dividing line between CityWalk and the theme park waiting on the other side.
For longtime Universal fans, the gateway can also carry plenty of memories. Someone who first visited Universal Studios Florida as a child may have walked beneath the same entrance years later with their own family, creating a connection between different visits across decades.
That familiarity is part of what makes the current construction so noticeable to guests arriving at Universal Orlando right now. The entrance that has welcomed visitors for 36 years suddenly looks very different, even if the work is temporary and routine maintenance rather than a permanent change.
